There’s one benefit to the low snowpack this year. The high mountain passes are opening early this year. That means travel to your favorite mountain destination is probably going take less time.
Independence Pass that goes over to Aspen opened a few days ago cutting travel time from Denver considerably. Trail Ridge Road through Rocky Mountain National Park is scheduled to open Monday May 14, 2012. That’s two weeks earlier than normal.
Mt Evans is still closed due to snow. After the snow is removed, CDOT will still need to do some annual repair and maintenance before it can open. Scheduled opening is Memorial Day weekend.
